Designed by Renzo Piano, one of the most important Portuguese architects on the international scene, Jardins Braça de Prata (Silver Arm Gardens) will leave its mark on 500 meters (1,640 ft) of the Lisbon waterfront on the banks of the Tagus River. At a place where weapons where once manufactured will be built a 10-hectare (1.1 million gsf) mixed-use development with primarily 499 multi-family units as well as restaurants and small retail, thus creating a local community and not just a housing complex or shopping center. A 25-acre urban park will make the transition between the river and the development. The architecture of the buildings and the designed urban fabric will recreate the neighborhoods of Lisbon, complete with facades of traditional ceramic tiles concealing interior courtyards. The Grande Organization is the developer for the project, and its partner, Grupo Obriverca, is the general contractor.
